ROMY

Romy with Hat, screen print on paper 70x100, 2007. This screen print series is based on a photograph by Berlin photographer Helga Kneidl, who took a series of pictures of the famous actress during a three-day encounter with Romy Schneider in Paris in 1973. Through the use of different colors in the screen print sequences, a constantly new statement and connotation emerges in Romy's face. In 2011, a 5-part screen print series on canvas was created from this motif, seemingly imitating the photographic development process.

Romy with her son David I–III, screen print, gouache on paper 210 x 70, 2006. Three chance amateur photos of actress Romy Schneider's last encounter with her son David, who died shortly after in a tragic accident, form the basis for these images. In the ever-narrowing space between Romy and David, time and closeness become visible. The knowledge of the encounter's tragedy lends the image series a special significance in retrospect.

Through a strong enlargement of the original photo and the flat rendering of the hair forms, attention is drawn to the details of the faces. This contemplation is further intensified by the slow-motion sequence. The universally known image of Romy is not fulfilled here — a new image of her can emerge.
